About Coach Ed

"Quality over Quantity" is the essence." -Coach Ed

I was a ranked junior player in the East Coast having competed in both sectional and national tournaments.

Through the website, Optimum Tennis I hope to share some of my learning experiences as a student of the game as well as share these experiences through online tennis instruction, video analysis and tennis instruction articles.

I Found Out The Hard Way

During my junior tournament tennis years, I sought out as much tennis coaching as I possibly could.

I took lessons with many different tennis teaching pros (and often times in other towns and even other states) in hopes that he or she would show me techniques that would improve my forehand, backhand or serve. I handed over my hard earned money each week to the teaching pro I had been working with at that time.

I soon found that the teaching pros I was taking lessons with did not offer me the solutions I had been looking for. My lessons with most teaching pros went like this: They would either hit with me for an hour as a hitting session, turn the lesson into a workout session where they drilled me making me run back and forth across the court on the dead run, or by showing me some obscure stroke that was either outdated, inefficent or impractical. Other times, the pro simply fed me tennis balls from his ball cart while spewing generic tennis advice such as, "Watch the ball." "Always step into the ball." "Move forward on every shot," "racket back earlier."

I discovered that more tennis instruction was not neccessarily better. The biggest change for me came when I took a more active approach to my tennis. I kept asking questions, began to study professional tennis video, and dropped the coaches that were causing my results on the court to be limited. I knew that if I wanted to improve my tennis, I needed to make a change.

My journey had only begun

That was when I knew I needed to be more selective as far as where and how I receive tennis instruction. I learned to embrace the new motto, "Quality over Quantity." I learned that it doesn't matter how many lessons you take or how many hours you spend practicing on the court...what matters is how efficiently you use your time and also the quality of the tennis instruction you are receiving. It was precisely when I sought out higher level coaching, while also passionately studying the top players in the game. I spent long hours studying tennis techniques of the top tennis pros in tennis in high speed slow motion video.

Hopefully, you won't have to go through the same struggles I had attempting to digest tennis instruction, and analyzing every aspect of the game while trying to improve your own tennis game. My goal on this site is to share my knowledge that I obtained through my lessons with top developmental coaches, through personal trial and error and observation of the game.
